The purpose of this assignment is for the student to synthesize pharmacological knowledge (i.e. core drug knowledge, core patient variables, and nursing implications) of pharmacotherapeutic agents into a useful teaching/learning tool for nurses and patients.
RATIONALE
Nurses are expected to provide expert nursing care to patients and their families as the patient moves along the disease trajectory from diagnosis to primary treatment and cure. Nurses must maintain up to date knowledge to be the “experts” to help guide the clients in the healthcare environment during acute and/or chronic disease management/treatment.
Nurses are very much involved in the pharmacologic management of the disease and of symptoms that arise during the course of illness (eg. pain, anxiety, etc.). As new medical technologies emerge in medical treatments with pharmacological agents, nurses need to stay abreast of newly approved agents, their mechanisms of action, and potential side effects. The nurse must be creative in developing strategies to promote concordance with treatment regimens and individualize patient care to enhance adherence.

CO5. Describe the many roles of the professional nurse including educator, researcher, and advocate, in relation to pharmacologic therapy and within the framework of a diverse population of patients, individuals, groups and communities. (PO6, 7)
