Your task is to select one of the four short stories we’ve read and discussed (“A&P,” “The Lady with the Pet dog,” “The Story,” or “I Stand Here Ironing” ) and render an analysis using one of the literary theories we’ve studied: New Criticism, Poststructuralism, or Post-Colonialism, or Marxist.
I chose "The lady with the Pet Dog" by Anton Chekhov. You can find this short story in the internet.
Reread the story you have chosen. Annotate it heavily. Consider meeting with a classmate to discuss the story.
Remember that if you use New Critical Theory, you will focus on elements of fiction only—plot, character, point of view, theme, setting, tone, style, imagery, irony. You will state a claim about how some element contributes to the theme or question in the story, and then you will give sufficient evidence to support that claim. Then you will show examples of what you mean, using summaries or quotes, always employing correct MLA-style in-text citations.
In your first paragraph, write some interesting thoughts about the overall theme or question you are addressing (such as, Most of us think of heroes as larger than life, or How can anyone understand true love until they’ve felt what it is—and what it’s not—first hand); state the full name of the author and, in quote marks, the title of the story, and then state briefly (2-3 sentences) the essence of the story, followed by your thesis statement.
Be sure each supporting paragraph is organized around a claim (topic sentence). Each paragraph will begin with a claim (we will discuss claims in class), and then you will support the claim with examples from the text—quotes, summaries, paraphrases. For example, you may claim that in “Lady With the Pet Dog,” the setting reflects Gurov’s transformation. If that is your claim, you might say, as one example: When Chekhov writes, “it was sultry indoors, while in the street the wind whirled the dust round and round, and blew people’s hats off,” (142), the wind suggests that Gurov is unsettled. This is an example of how to use the text to support a claim. But please do not use this example.
