This is an opportunity to use two primary source documents to develop a discussion of a particular topic. It is important that you do the following:
Discuss the documents together using key themes; do not discuss them separately one after the other.
Structure your exercise in an essay format, including an introduction and conclusion. The exercise must be fully referenced and contain a bibliography.
Apply the methodology of primary source criticism introduced at the beginning of them module (e. g. who produced the document? Why was it produced? etc). Please note that this should only form a small part of your exercise.
Place the document in the historical context in which it was produced.
Most importantly of all, use the documents to open up your discussion to highlight the arguments, interpretations and debates of historians.
Compare the documents where it is relevant to do so, but remember that comparison is not the primary objective of this exercise.
Avoid bland, superficial and personal responses to the documents.
