Ali decided to sell his shotgun and on Monday he put an advertisement in Shooting Weekly which stated, One only shotgun little used – 5,000, followed by his name, address and telephone number. Basil saw the advert on Monday and telephoned Ali and left a message on his answer phone machine stating that he would pay 4,000.
By Wednesday, as Basil had not heard from Ali, he telephoned him again and offered him 4,700. Ali had not listened to his telephone messages and said that he would consider it, to which Basil replied that he wanted written confirmation by Friday.
On Thursday Ali gave the shotgun to Chris, an auctioneer, who put it in an auction. Only one bid was made, by Don, for 200 and Chris withdrew the shotgun and returned it to Ali.
Late on Friday night Ali went to Basil’s house but Basil had gone to bed. Just after midnight, Ali put a scrap of paper through Basil’s letterbox stating, The gun’s yours with Ali’s signature underneath.
