Assignment -Read Richard Hofstadter’s The American Political Tradition and the Men Who Made It (New York: Vintage, paperback, 1989) very carefully, focusing on the chapters that concern the presidents: Thomas Jefferson (Ch. 2), Andrew Jackson (3), Abraham Lincoln (5), Theodore Roosevelt (9), Woodrow Wilson (10), Herbert Hoover (11), and Franklin Roosevelt (12). In no more than three (3) pages, summarize Hofstadter’s main ideas about which of these presidents were successful, which were not, and why. Then, after conducting appropriate research, examine the presidency of one (1) of these presidents: Harry Truman (1945-1953), Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1961), Lyndon Johnson (1963-1969), Richard Nixon (1969-1974), Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) or Bill Clinton (1993-2001). Using Hofstadter’s methodology (critical, even skeptical), assess whether or not the president whom you selected was successful and explain why. Focus on presenting and analyzing facts and be specific: Vague, broad generalizations will not suffice.
Research: In addition to Hofstadter The American Political Tradition, you must consult and cite at least six (6) sources for this paper. The other required texts for the class, dictionaries, and encyclopedias -especially Wikipedia – may not be cited. You are encouraged to search in good books, subscription databases of scholarly journal articles, newspaper and magazine articles, and primary sources. No more than three (3) sources may be from the Internet. (Be very careful about using websites, which tend to lack depth of information and/or are unreliable.) Facts that are not generally known and direct quotations from any source must be fully cited in accordance with MLA standards, and all sources must be included in a Works Cited page. Citations to Internet sources must include the name of the author and the complete title of the item.
