For your final project of the semester, you will present on a pop culture text of your choosing. This can be a scene or character from a film or television show, a song, music video, or performance, an advertisement, an interview of a celebrity, a popular You Tube phenomenon, an internet fan culture, etc. Remember our early discussions of cultural studies. You have a broad range of options to choose from, so be creative and explore your interests.
Think about the ways your chosen text relates to the ideas we have discussed this semester. Does the text you have chosen queer some aspect of normative culture? How? Does it end up reinforcing some of the norms it at first seems to challenge? Work through the steps of careful interpretation to develop a sophisticated thesis statement about your text.
You will need to include research as part of the argument you make. One of your sources must be a queer theoretical text we have read this semester (choose from the list below). You must also find one academic source on your own. This second source can be another queer theoretical perspective that helps you read your chosen text, or a critical analysis of the text itself. Don?t settle for the first secondary source you find; look at multiple articles/books to see what source will be most useful for the questions you want to answer about your text. Beyond these sources you may also choose to research popular responses to your chosen text in newspapers articles, reviews, etc. to think about how this text has been described and received by mainstream culture.
Your presentation should be at least 10 and no more than 15 minutes long. If you plan to show video clips, remember your time limit. Do not spend so much time showing us videos that you don?t have time to explain and support your argument. You will be graded on your preparation, clarity, and focus. Your attention and participation during others? presentations will also be a component of the grade, and we will conclude each presentation with a short opportunity to ask questions of the presenter. A more detailed rubric will be handed out before presentations begin.
