Contemporary society is often described as ‘postmodern’; for Fredric Jameson, one of the key thinkers in postmodern thought whose work we will be reading this week, postmodernity is ‘the dominant cultural logic of late capitalism’. In this lecture, we will examine how postmodernism emerged out of modernism, originating in a critique of the ‘grand narratives’ and the belief in progress, objectivity, and reason associated with the Enlightenment. Following on from the last part of the course, where we considered the cultural politics of taste, we will examine how categories of good taste and minimalism, associated with modernism, have given way to a postmodern aesthetic that celebrates vulgarity, playfulness and consumption. The lecture will focus on examples from postmodern art and architecture to examine how postmodern thought has questioned and transformed ideas about ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture.
