“cafeteria-style” essay exam. You will choose four (4) of the essay prompts bellow and answer each of them in a short essay of at least 400 words. All of your responses need to make specific use of course sources including the textbook, reader and any supplemental sources provided in class (lecture notes, films, articles, Web sites). 3) Contrast ascribed status with achieved status. What is the connection between roles and statuses in society? How are roles learned and from whom? How does status reflect group affiliations?
4) Define “ social construction” as a sociological perspective. How does social construction ask us to evaluate our lives? How does social construction give context to ideas about what is “natural” and/or “ normal”
5) Using the social theories presented in your book compare and contrast explanations for the existence of deviant behavior. You may wish to compare several theories.
6) What are the most dominant forms of social stratification in America today? Use concrete examples to describe status groups in contemporary society.
7) Compare and contrast the pluralism and assimilation as cultural/societal goals for the relationship of people from different social groups.
8) Use one or more theories from the textbook to describe the relationship between the “individual” and “society.” How are individual behaviors patterned by social interactions?
9) Define the terms “social structure” and “human agency.” How do both contribute to what we call “society?” How are these concepts interactive?
10) What is the Dramaturgical perspective on social interactions? Be sure to discuss emotional labor and impression management.
