Schank and Abelson say: “If we construct our own version of truth by reliance upon skeleton stories, two people can know exactly the same facts, but construct a story that relays those facts in very different ways. Because they are using different story skeletons, their perspectives will vary.”
Write a paper in which you describe and analyze one of the following:
A.A divorce or break up story you know about. This could be something you have experienced, heard about or read about –including “Shiloh” or "The Disappearance" — even a celebrity divorce story (cite sources and be sure to explain so that a reader unfamiliar with the case will understand it). You may even interview people that you know!
OR
B. Any other conflict between two people that you know about: this could be a parent-child conflict, a conflict between friends or siblings. Whatever. This might be a more difficult topic than "A" since you don’t have the ready-made story skeletons to use as you do in a divorce story. You will have to figure out new skeletons.
Parts of the paper: This paper should have 5 parts, indicated by bolded headings.
Introduction: give a brief overview of the story you will tell and mention Schank and Abelson (You can even quote the paragraph above that I quoted from them! It’s a good opening). Make sure the reader knows that you will tell two versions of the story and also analyze it according to skeletons proposed by S&A.
Narrative, Part I: Tell one person’s side of the story. Give him or her a name, not just "my friend." You can always use a fake name. You may write in first person, adopting the voice of the two tellers (using "I" as in "In A Grove") or third person, as in "Shiloh"
Narrative, Part II: Tell the other person’s side, using the same style as part I, first or third person.
Do not mention story skeletons in the narratives. Just tell two versions of the story.
Analysis: based on your knowledge of Schank and Abelson 4,” what are the underlying skeletons the two people are using, and what skeletons have the tellers perhaps left out? You may take the names for the skeletons from S&A4, though you may modify them to fit your stories. Quote at least three times from Schank and Abelson.
Conclusion, sum up what is important about what you have said.
