The purpose of midterm paper is to understand how five types of ethical theories analyzed in our class Virtue Ethics (Aristotle’s ethics of virtue), Deontology (Kant’s deontology ethics), Consequentialism (Mill’s utilitarian ethics), moral relativism/metaethics, and ethics of justice work in particular ethical situation based on topics that we already studied in class.
How to approach the paper: fundamentals:
Your goal is to identity what works and does not work in these ethical theories in connection to story in documentary. For instance, traditional theories (virtue, deontology and consequentialism) impose eternal ethical standards on changing world, while the story in documentary is contemporary and based on ethical realities of the 20th century. Also, the approach of each traditional ethical theory is partial, which means that instead of dealing with all components of ethical action (virtue/good character/intentions + good motivation + good consequences), these theories concentrate on only one (either good character, motivation, or consequences). It does not mean that these theories are wrong, just insufficient.
As for moral relativism, it is the same charge of insufficiency: without universal level of justice, it is impossible to explain/do justice to particular situation (like the story in our documentary).
Ethics of justice appears to be more suitable for comprehensive analysis of particular topic that we studied in class.
How to write the paper: practical applications
You have to briefly explain traditional ethics (as based on either character, or motivation, or consequences), metaethics (based on particular culture), and ethics of justice with respect your topic (for instance, Nation-Building, Hippies), or /personality (for instance, Hitler, Eminem) in particular ways.
Your major emphasis has to be on ethics of justice. Ethics of justice required three levels of justice, as we studied in class, as well six types and 216 ethical perspectives. Please do not hesitate to use ideas from your Course Packet (on Blackboard, under Course Content). Hoverer, it has to be your interpretation of these ideas.
