The Applied Organisational Analysis module is an applied module in that it asks you to relate your learning and skills to the analysis of some aspect of an organisation’s operations and link this analysis to relevant management theory. You are required to produce an applied, analytical report based on the information and / or experience gained from the selected work organisation such as the co-op or WHSMITH and based on your chosen area of management application. The report must identify a specific area of management activity and theory and make a critical analysis of how it was / is applied in the workplace. The analysis should make links to underpinning theory and practice and where appropriate, identify areas for improvement in the application of the management area in question. As an example, you may consider the role that leadership plays in the chosen organisation and how they develop and nurture leadership skills. This might be through considering a specific project that has taken place or be a general overview of the organisation’s approach to leadership. In reality the choice of area is very broad and this is just one possible example. You can consider any area of management activity as long as it has, or is being, applied in the selected organisation. Do take care to ensure that your report is a critical analysis and not simply a description of what has happened. Your module tutors will be able to guide you in this area. Use the tutors, they are there to help you. A successful assignment will: – Identify an appropriate area of applied management activity in a real organisation. – Critically reflect on that activity in terms of its appropriateness and effectiveness. &????;Show links between management practice and the underpinning theory and provide appropriate references and bibliography. – Develop suggestions for possible improvements to the management practice in question &????;Produce an appropriately presented report (Word-processed or typed) This is a report not a book report (5000 words) There are a number of things that you need to consider if you wish to attain a good grade for your Applied Organisational Analysis Report. Whilst some are self explanatory, the key issues to remember are as follows:- This is a report not an essay. The work must therefore be in report format. If in doubt ask the tutor but some basic notes on report writing are attached above to help you. Planning your report is a crucial part of the process so start this early. If as a result of your research you find you need to change something, that is fine and you can build that into your planning. Again ask the tutor for advice if in doubt Your AOA proposal should be the starting point for your planning and you should always ensure that the work you are doing is in line with your proposal. If you find that your proposal needs to change for some reason, contact your tutor. Remember that you are meant to analyse the issues not just describe them. Don’t just say what the organisation does. Analyse by comparing, contrasting and evaluating the issues against other practice, examples or theory and don’t be afraid to express your own, informed opinions. (See below) Your own opinions are important as they can show applied and innovative thinking. However, they should be based on factual evidence not anecdotes or bias. If you think something is good or something is wrong, feel free to say so but explain in your report why you have such an opinion. To achieve higher grades you must relate your findings and observations to appropriate theory and research. This means things like referenced text books and journal articles not anonymous comments from a Website or someone’s personal opinion from the organisation that cannot be backed up or substantiated. Anecdotal evidence may be used in some circumstances to illustrate a point but not to prove it. Proper referencing is absolutely a requirement, as is the provision of a proper bibliography using the Harvard referencing and citation system. This is very important and could make the difference between passing or failing the assessment. Finally, remember that there is a word limit and that your report must be handed in on time.less
