As we briefly discussed in class, one of the main components of a Comedy, especially a Shakespearean comedy, is the notion of love. The impulse, for most readers, is to idealize this love as some absolute, pure exchange between two benefiting characters. Shakespeare, however, quickly challenges that concept in Midsummer Night’s Dream with the opening scene between Hippolyta and Theseus. The notion of "love" gets further attention when the two sets of lovers enter the forest and are bewildered, primarily by sight. The concept of "gaze" is important in this text and how it relates to love or how it challenges our understanding of that word. For this discussion post, I want you to construct a small argument on how gaze operates in Midsummer Night’s Dream and how that gaze defines the love presented in the text. Hint: Gaze is a specific kind of sight between lovers. Normally, critics have focused on it from the male, in an oppressive fashion. However, MSND does not solely give us the male gaze. Instead, many characters are affected by gaze. So, the potion Puck uses to alter the gaze of Lysander and Demetrius, as well as Titania, will be of vast import in your analysis here.
