ASSIGNMENT #7: Forum on the Human Genome Project This assignment is worth 20 points and involves 2 main activities. You should start by clicking on the Human Genome Project Web link just below this description. When you click on the link it will open up the home page for the Human Genome Project; now scroll down to the pictures and click on the section called “Human Genome Project Information”. This will open a second page where you should click on the gold colored section labeled “Ethical, Legal and Social Issues”. This will give you a list of nine subtopics, each of which has several issues, articles and further links under its umbrella (For example: The first subtopic listed is “Fairness in the use of Genetic Information”, and it has a blue link titled “Privacy and Legislation”).

Your first task is to choose the two subtopics that interest you the most. Then go through the material that is posted at those subtopics. Now, from your first subtopic, choose one of the many issues that are mentioned and do the following: Part 1, Comment #1 (5 points) – Summarize the issue and both the pros and cons of pursuing increased technology in that area. What reasons might someone give to support the Human Genome Project contributing to such an enterprise? What reasons might someone give to oppose the Human Genome Project contributing to such an undertaking? Post your comment by clicking on Human Genome Project Forum (either click on the link to the forum here on the timeline or click on the “Forum” tab to the right and you will see the forum title). Next click on the title of the forum, which says “Human Genome Project, assignment #7”, and then click on “start new thread” – be sure to scroll down and click on post in order to post the entry after you have typed it.

Now, turn to the second subtopic you selected. Read the material posted carefully, and do the following: Part 2, Comment #2 (5 points) – Take a stand on some issue that you find described in this material. State clearly whether you think that the Human Genome Project should be involved in such an enterprise or not. Then support your claim by arguing from one of the theories that we have studied. For example: My position can be supported by appealing to the principle of utilitarianism because . . . Use this comment to start a second new thread; post it the same way as you did in Part 1.

Part 3, Reply #1, Agreement (5 points). This part of the assignment requires you to read and respond to some of the postings from your fellow students. Click on the title of the comment you would like to read; then click on “Show Text”. Now read the comment. If you agree with this person’s view and choose to reply to this comment, then click on post reply at the bottom, and type in your reply. I want you to state clearly that you are agreeing with this person and then to give another argument which helps to further strengthen the first author’s position. Again, be sure to click on post at the bottom of the page after you finish typing.
