For the journal assignment for Modules 5-6, please address some of the following questions. You are not required to answer all of these questions; however, please make sure to answer at least one question from Module Five and at least one question from Module Six. Furthermore, you are not limited to these questions and may address any other question raised within the reading. Just pick a few questions to focus on, writing at least enough to meet the 1,500 minimum word requirement of the journal assignment:
(1) What point does Pieper want to make with his story of the youthful Apollodoros?
(2) How much leisure do you have? Not much, it may be imagined. Does Pieper have a valid point here, or is he being unrealistic? Are our lives basically all right even if we have no time for contemplation? Isn’t leisure for video games, TV, movies, or surfing the Net?
(3) Do you see any relation between the Pilgrims and the "stranger" referred to in the Plato quotation under "Perspective" above?
(4) Americans are sometimes said to be individualistic and materialistic. Does this sound true of these Pilgrims? Did their religion make them unable to criticize their dominant culture? Did they believe they had the right and responsibility to form a government on their own without asking anyone’s permission, whether king or pope? Explain your answers.
(5) With careful citations from Thoreau (he has a lot of argument in the text), discuss his position as it might apply to more recent situations. You may pick wars or some other issue of concern. If you are in agreement with Thoreau, how do you avoid advocating a lawless society that would be worse than what we’ve got? If you oppose him, how do you square this with our own American history which from Plymouth on has at times engaged in civil disobedience?
(6) What do you think of Thoreau’s discussion of life and economics?
