Evaluation and Analysis of a Study: The purpose of this assignment is to apply the knowledge about the research process you gained from Weeks #2 and #3. You will be comparing an article that is a news report on an original research study to the actual study. You will need to find two articles:
1. Find a news report of a health care related topic or report on research (this should be in the popular media) Students have used internet sites, news broadcasts, newspaper articles, etc. This report will NOT be a journal article.
2. Find the original source article (journal article) that the news report references, or find an article that supports the information being reported. (This article should be an empirical study)
• The paper explains the research process and what can be assumed from the study based on the given questions:
o Summarize the information from the popular media.
o Summarize the actual research study.
o What information is needed to determine the validity and reliability of the reported information?
o Compare the original research with the report from the popular literature.
• Was there any bias noted in the presentation if the data?
o How might bias be presented in a news report?
• What additional information would be needed to determine:
o Study effectiveness
• Review the author’s conclusions.
? Do the conclusions in the popular media report match the results of the original study?
? Summarize your analysis of the two articles.
Conclusion: Discuss why information/data should be critically analyzed.
