Introduction – A brief description is given of the problem, setting where the problem exists, and where the project will take place.
Nature of the Problem – A ?problem? is an actual situation that is hindering the overall effectiveness of the classroom, school, or organization. The description of the problem may be broad. However, the problem must be supported by documented evidence that the problem exists and the impact it is having on the organization. If the problem is too great, the student may choose to address only some aspect (s) of the problem.
Purpose of the Project – Following the broad statement of the problem the student elects to narrow it down and address only specific aspects of the problem. Once that is decided the purpose of the project is stated clearly and succinctly, such as, ?The purpose of the project is to ?.?
Be careful not to suggest an immediate or pre-conceived solution to the problem in the purpose statement. The intent of a well-written proposal is to design a research process out of which a potential solution or alternative solutions will emerge.
Research Question(s) – The research questions should flow right from the purpose of the project. Review the two documents (Activity Resources) on writing research questions as you draft this portion.
Background and Significance of the Problem – The student should document the problem to demonstrate that it is generally recognized in the field, as well as by the student?s organization. The status of the problem needs to be supported by data and by a preliminary review of the professional literature or expert opinion. From this, major issues or components of the problem are presented. In this section, the student will connect the literature to the status of the problem and to the organization. There needs to be evidence of organizational awareness of the problem as well as support for the project. The student?s role within the organization is discussed in order to substantiate the feasibility of the execution of the project. The significance to the organization should also be discussed. The profile of the organization, writer?s role, description of the target group, and other pertinent general background information is included in this section.
