In the term paper, you will view a film of your choice and compare and contrast one or two aspects of the culture portrayed with one of the films viewed in the class. Some of possible aspects of culture that may be chosen for comparison are: gender, marriage, cultural change, kinship, subsistence strategies, religion, and social stratification.
Do not attempt to compare every aspect of cultural life portrayed in the films; your paper will lose focus.
You must also incorporate into your paper at least one article from a peer-reviewed journal (not necessarily a anthropology journal).
Note: You must include a works cited page, and you must include the films you analyze in the works cited page. Citation format within the body of the paper itself should be either MLA or APA.
A list of possible films has been posted in the Assignments section of Blackboard. You may choose a film that does not appear on the list, but please do so in consultation with me.
Your paper should include the following:
1. A brief synopsis of each film focusing on the aspect(s) of the culture you wish to analyze.
2. A full description and analysis (using proper anthropological terminology) of the depiction of the cultural aspect in each film.
a. Your analysis must be supported by carefully chosen examples drawn from each film.
3. Address in what ways this cultural aspect is distinct in each culture portrayed.
4. Address in what ways is this cultural aspect is similar in both cultures, if at all.
5. You should include in your paper a short discussion of the “partial truths” of film; that is, how the film is showing you a particular version of the cultural aspect portrayed. How might this partiality affect the depiction of the cultural aspect under examination?
6. Of course, your paper should include an introduction and conclusion.
