This paper would be my final paper of political theory class. I will upload several class notes for help
you to understand Marx, Mill, and Leopold along with Wendell Berry, each understand “progress”
Moreover, you can use references from class note. Thank you.
Paper topic
– In lieu of a final exam, you will write a final essay describing, explaining, and critically evaluating
how Marx, Mill, and Leopold along with Wendell Berry, each understand “progress.”
1) What main obstacles or dangers to the betterment of the conditions of life does each account
identify;
2) How does each account think progress is pursued and assessed;
3) What conditions and resources does each account understand as vital to the achievement of
progress as each understands it?
4) Finally, your essay should offer a specific critical analytical thesis about whether “we” are making
“progress” according to your evaluative assessment of their accounts of progress and its
components listed above.*
*Let me add the following cautionary suggestion about the fourth dimension of your essay in
relation to the other three dimensions.
I’m not sure that there is any topic which most modern persons are anymore ill prepared to think
about, critically and analytically, than “progress.” Which is to say that the likelihood of your being
sufficiently critical and successfully analytical about your own preconceptions of progress as a
standard against which to hold these theorists accountable is slim. Therefore, the paper charges
you to represent and then discuss these three understandings to facilitate your reflection on the
theme of progress as I have defined it above.
As in all of your previous assignments, you are challenged to offer a succinct, subtle and incisive
description of each theoretical perspective on the given them, and an explanation of the
assumptions and convictions underwriting that theoretical understanding (what I have called the
“what” and “why” of a theory).
You are more likely to write a better essay if you demonstrate the quality of your thinking applied
critically and analytically to their understandings, rather than write an essay where you hold them
accountable according to your understanding of progress. Your evaluative judgments cannot help
but enter into and shape the paper and its thesis. But you will want to be as critically analytical
about your own ideas as you are about theirs. So, a good strategy is first to think along with each
thinker as best as you can, aiming for the most subtle and generous understanding of their thinking
you can muster. Then move to think against them, even if you are inclined to agree with them, by
posing questions and thinking through how they might respond to your questions about their
views. Such a receptive, humble, and learning approach before these great minds, whatever you
may think of their views, is likely to yield a more thoughtful and better essay.
