The subject of this report is your individual company. This is the most critical, and often the
most difficult aspect of the problem solving process.
You will begin your report by identifying all the problem symptoms in your company which will
lead to the problem statement. Drawing on your situation analysis, the first section of this report
should focus on the problem symptoms within your company. Symptoms may be financial
indicators, reoccurring behavioral issues, or some other metric. Next, you will specify any
industry-wide problem symptoms. You are looking for current problem symptoms, not possible
threats. All symptoms should be backed by evidence. This section should conclude with a
problem statement. The statement should be specific and concise (1 – 2 sentences).
If you identify multiple problems within your firm, you will want to use a prioritization matrix to
identify the most mission critical and urgent problem. This project focuses on solving one
problem.
For the second section of this report, you will use either a fishbone diagram or a CLD to
describe the causes of your problem. You will then describe the diagram, making it apparent to
the reader why the diagram you?ve created accurately describes the causes. You will used a
combination of evidence and logic in this section.
The Problem Statement Report should be 3 pages, double spaced, 12 point font (not including
any diagrams or graphics). There is not a required number of sources but you?ll likely use your
company?s 10K, its industry report (IBISWord), and a SWOT analysis at minimum. Newspaper
articles (NY Times, Wall Street Journal) are excellent starting points to learn about potential
problem symptoms within your company
