For this final paper, you will utilize the topic you have explored throughout the term in your Issue
Proposal, Annotated Bibliography, and Exploratory Paper to join in–and advance–the preexisting
conversation about your chosen issue. You will generate your own claim about the topic and
support it with evidence gained from outside academic sources (logos), establish credibility by
synthesizing those sources responsibly and effectively and in a way that fully supports your central
claim, or thesis (ethos), and appeal to the emotions and values of the audience you choose to
address (pathos).

1.Your first task is to come up with a central claim.
2. Once you’ve settled on your central claim, attach as many reasons as are necessary to support
your position.
Your claim and reasons together will form your thesis, which should advance the conversation about
your issue. You can do this by disagreeing with someone else’s view, agreeing with someone
else’s view but for different reasons, agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously (all described in
Chapter 4 of They Say/I Say), or simply by introducing a view that has yet to be considered. The
point is that you don�t want simply to reiterate an argument you�ve read. Your argument should
be original.
3. For each claim and reason in your thesis, draw out the warrant and determine whether it is a
proposition that needs support with your audience. If it does, provide appropriate support.
4. For each of your reasons, provide sufficient evidence that your reasons are true. Your personal
experiences, observations, and reasoning count as evidence, but you should also draw extensively
on outside sources for evidence to support your reasons.
5. Address at least one extended counterargument to some part of your argument. You should
choose a real opponent found in an outside source. Make sure you state your opponent�s position
accurately, make any necessary concessions (Be a good Rogerian!), and then offer your own
rebuttal. (Pay special attention to Chapter 6 in They Say/I Say for instruction in how to deal
effectively with counterarguments.)
