Assessment Two – Theoretical review essay
The second assessment will build directly on the case study analysis you have developed in
assessment one. The central goal of assessment two is, by using governance theory and analytical
frameworks, to develop a critical analysis of the practical governance challenges you have identified
with your case study, and possible solutions to this challenge.
The objective of assessment two is to formally evaluate the case study by putting it into the
context of two possible theoretical approaches.
The aim of the task is to demonstrate strong knowledge, understanding and critical engagement
with core course readings and themes. In preparing and writing this essay, you are expected to
demonstrate evidence of wide reading and critical engagement with the topic you choose to
explore.
The questions and issues your theoretical review should cover are as follows:

What insights do each of the two selected governance models/frameworks offer about the
governance problem (its character, causes and/or consequences)? [NB: If they do not say anything
directly about your problem, explain how you think the literature examining the governance
models/frameworks can be interpreted or adapted to gain a more complete understanding of your
governance problem];
What insights do each of the frameworks suggest regarding the relative merits of different solutions
to your governance problem?
Critically evaluate and compare the capacity of your two selected governance frameworks for
understanding your governance problem, and prescribing solutions to it;
Is a single approach better to understand the problem, or is a better framework of understanding
achieved by combining elements of the two model/frameworks?
The three pieces of assessment are interrelated and designed to build sequentially on one
another�drawing in, and informed progressively by the topics we cover in seminars as the course
develops.
