A note on Case Studies:
The primary responsibility for analyzing cases belongs to the student, not the instructor. Therefore,
it is the students responsibility to read the case materials carefully so that he or she comes to class with arguments that strengthen his or her opinions. It is helpful to underline key lines or sections in the text that make points or impress the student as important. Emphasis and attention are focused squarely on the student participants. The goal is to attain a high level of student participation and a high level of understanding of the text as well as a clear picture of the leadership issues and principles embedded in that work. The student should also strive to apply the ideas and lessons learned from the case to his or her personal and work situations. In addition to all the other benefits, the study of great leadership texts can foster a journey to self-discovery.
Letter from Birmingham Jail is a classic work in the philosophy of non-violent resistance, which offers an opportunity to discuss leadership, management, and critical thinking on multiple levels. Discussion of both personal characteristics and large-scale social problems are appropriate in this beautifully crafted effort of a man who was "catapulted into leadership" largely on the basis of his communication skills. The case presents material on several themes:
Bases of Power Charisma
Organizational Change Transformational Leadership
Implementation Tactics Interdependence
Communication Leadership Style
Conflict Resolution Discrimination
Critical Thinking
The selections that have been excerpted from this novel offer an excellent laboratory for study of various leadership and management themes as well as many examples of critical thinking. Please be prepared to discuss how the case represents and demonstrates each of the above themes.
How to Prepare the Case Study Portfolio Assignment:
Please read Letter from Birmingham Jail (under Assignments Week 3). Select and highlight excerpts that deal directly with the issue of management, leadership, and the above themes. The purpose is to establish a general understanding of the case and management, leadership, and critical thinking issues associated with it. There is no one "right" answer to the questions, and different answers can be valid.
