The Take Home Paper will be made available to students online on the Friday of week five, which is almost the midway point in the semester. The take home paper will consist of four (4) questions, taken from the review questions in lessons one up to and including lesson four (one question from each lesson). Students will choose one (1) of these questions to answer. They will be required to use a minimum of three (3) scholarly sources to answer the question. These scholarly sources must be different from those used in the course and your answers must expand on the information and knowledge raised in the course articles and the answers and responses that have been posted on the bulletin board. The questions are aimed to test your ability to apply your sociological knowledge and critical thinking and analytical skills. This assignment also aims to develop student’s abilities to carry out academic research.

I recognize that there is a tendency for students to form study groups to share their ideas, and while I think it is important to exchange ideas and opinions with your colleagues I believe that the take home test should be treated as an individual responsibility and should be reflective of the views and insights of the person writing it. I do not want to leave room for confusion about plagiarism. What this means is if two answers look exactly the same they both will be considered as an act of plagiarism. In other words each individual’s answers should be unique and reflective of their own voice, just the same way that one would write an in class test or an individual essay. In effect this is very similar to an in class test with the only difference being that this is done at home instead of being written in class. Therefore I am going to ask that students treat the take home test in the same manner as they would an in-class test.

Students must clearly identify which question they are answering. The paper must be typed, double-spaced and grammatically correct, with a target length of FOUR (4) double-spaced pages. You will also be graded on the organization and quality of the writing, so make sure your answer IS clearly organized and well written.

Grading Criteria for Take Home Paper:

Your Take Home Paper will be evaluated on the following criteria:

1. Content and clarity of argument– (10 points) adequately addressing the question, critical analysis, and comparative analysis that considers the strengths and the weaknesses of the research sources in light of the paper’s main argument. Avoid relying too heavily on summarizing your research sources or simply describing a problem. Use examples to support your own arguments and analysis. You must engage the sources and critically apply them to your argument (i.e. thesis).

a) include a clearly stated and developed research argument or thesis regarding your position on the question;

b) clearly explain important concepts used in the paper;

c) be analytical (i.e. critically engage relevant theories or concepts) and not be descriptive in nature;

d) draw from the contents of at least three (3) scholarly sources (scholarly books, peer-reviewed articles, government reports and statistics) that are relevant to your topic. On-line sources accessed by using “Google” or other similar search engines are not accepted sources for your paper, including information taken from the popular Wikipedia website. You can also use reference material from the lesson notes, the course textbook and readings and the bulletin board, but this material must be properly cited and they do not count toward your three scholarly sources.

2. Structure and organization – (5 points) paper should include the following components:

a) Introduction: clearly stating your thesis/ research argument and the specified points you will be arguing in the paper.

b) Body of paper: where you develop your argument with support from your reference sources.

c) Conclusion: links your main ideas together.

3. Proper referencing style and grammar – (5 points) both direct quotes and an author’s ideas must be referenced in your paper. APA or MLA referencing styles are acceptable. Proper writing style, grammatical correctness, appropriate vocabulary, correct spelling, clear sentences, etc. should be used.

The paper must be typed, free of spelling and grammatically errors, with a target length of FOUR (4) double-spaced pages. Please use 12 pt, Times Roman font, with regular margins (i.e. approx. 2.54 cm). All pages, with the exception of the title page, should be numbered. Students must clearly identify which question they are answering.
