The students will research and analyze cases (ideal examples or violations) of organizational/professional ethics and present their cases. The focus of the presentation is on the identification and the analysis of professional conducts in the world of business and professional organizations.
a. The student will select a case of organizational/professional ethics and identify and discuss and analyze its ethical nature (or the nature of ethical violations)b. The object of this paper is to analyze the elements of organizational/professional ethics in connection with major ethical theories (such as utilitarianism, Kantian deontology, virtue ethics, and social contract theory, and social justice).
c. Specifically, students need to discuss the following points in their papers.
– Presentation and explanation of at least two opposite (or alternative) interpretations/views of the case.
– Presentation and explanation of basic ethical theories relevant to the case.
– Analysis of the case in terms of these interpretations and ethical theories.
Include the following information in your paper:
1. Case: What has happened?
2. Stakeholders: Who are the stakeholders in this case? Who (person, people, community, & institution) are involved?
3. What priority rank do you give to each stakeholder?
4. Were any ethical norms or principles (one or two from the utilitarian, Kantian, Social Contractarian [social justice], virtue, etc. principles or values) violated? Are these principles conflicting with each other and creating a dilemma situation?
5. Who were the winners or who were the losers in this case?
6. Would you have done differently if you were the person who made the decision?
7. What should have been done prevent the practice from occurring?
8. Would you recommend any moral or decision principles based on this case study?
For example, the general structure of the paper will look like the following:
(pp. 1 – 2): Introduction and Presentation of the issue – Example “In the professional world there is this common practice of X. X is defined as such and such and usually occurs in such and such situations.”
(pp. 3 – 4): Discussion of two opposite or alternative views: – Example “A said that X is morally problematic because of XYZ but B said that X is not problematic because of PSQ.”
(pp. 5 – 6): Discussion of relevant moral principle: – Example “The paper analyzes the case based on the principles of utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is an ethical point of view which emphasizes GHJ. According to utilitarianism, X is not appropriate professional conduct because utilitarianism justifies such and such conducts based on its principle of such and such.”
(p. 7): Presentation and explanation of the writer’s view: Example – “I believe that X is morally problematic. Even though B argued that it is not, X still has JHY. JHY goes against the main principle of utilitarianism.”
d. Explanation, Analysis, and Evaluation of professional ethics (business ethics, bio-medical ethics, research ethics, justice principles) is essential in this research project.e. The paper must include at least 4 primary sources (on ethics, business-professional ethics, research ethics, bio-medical ethics, justice principles) and the student should cite these sources on the reference list.
f. The paper should display professional and academic qualities. Paragraphs are organized with the flow of ideas (with minimal repetition). Grammar and Spelling should be checked.
g. The paper is intended to be a research paper and should be developed mainly from primary sources (books, journal articles, etc.). The internet is not necessarily a primary source.
h. Length: 7 Pages (not including cover and reference pages), Double Spaced, 12 font size, Times New Roman font. Here are some of the major evaluation criteria for the term paper:
