Choose a portrayal of some English variety (dialect or accent) in a film, television, or radio production, in which the accent is depicted by an actor who is not a native speakers of the target variety. Your task is to evaluate the actor’s depiction of the target variety. Make reference to established documentation on the target variety. This involves several steps.
1. Summarize the vowel space and other properties of the target variety:
Provide phonetic transcriptions for the vowel of each lexical set. Be very careful about using Wells’s tables of incidence, since these can be phonemic rather than phonetic.
Specify any mergers and splits that are known properties of the target.
Describe any known phonological alternations within the target.
Describe crucial examples of distinct lexical incidence within the target.
Note any other lexical or morpho-syntactic properties of the target.
2. Document the actor’s own regional background and native variety in a manner similar to what you did in (1) above. You should confirm that the actor natively has a particular regional accent by finding and listening to interview footage (for example on YouTube), where the actor is speaking unscriptedly and is not performing any role. Note: one’s accent is most likely to be consistent with where one was raised and reached adolescence, rather than where one was born.
3. Hypothesize the degree of difficulty the actor would encounter in depicting the target variety. Specifically, which lexical sets and phonological alternations clearly differ between the target variety in (1) and the actor’s native speech in (2)?
4. Evaluate how well the actor portrays the target variety. For each differing property in (3) above, note whether the actor uses their own form, the target form, or something else.
Does the actor get any features wrong that should be easy (as in, are the same in the actor’s accent and in the target variety)?
Does the actor make use of anything from (1d) or (1e) in their portrayals? Do they overdo the shibboleth?
Be mindful also of variation (for example, non-rhoticity is variable in Boston, so an actor doing a Boston accent is not necessarily inconsistent if they are sometimes rhotic).
Additional guidelines
The depicting actor should clearly be attempting to portray the variety rather than mocking it.
Try to be precise about choosing exemplars of the target variety.
You do not need to evaluate the social ramifications of the depiction.
