A persuasive speech is your attempt to reinforce, establish or change an audience member’s belief. Consistent with this, you may attempt to move the audience to action. This speech utilizes the motivated sequence, which is based on a problem-solving process familiar to many of us.
1. Prepare and deliver a persuasive speech 8-10 minutes in length utilizing Monroe’s motivated sequence. This speech should be delivered extemporaneously from note cards.
2. Prepare a complete sentence outline that clearly indicates the five steps of the motivated sequence. For example, point number one will probably be labeled the attention step. Point number two will be labeled the need step and so on.
3. The attention step should not only gain the audience’s attention, but justify the topic. Use transitions and signposts throughout the speech to enhance message clarity. The action step should bring the speech to a close for you and you audience. Write out the attention and action steps and transitions in full in your outline.
4. The speech should indicate evidence of careful audience analysis. You need to make your presentation interesting and applicable to the audience. At the end of your outline, EXPLAIN IN A SHORT PARAGRAPH HOW YOU ANALYZED YOUR AUDIENCE AND WHAT YOU BELIEVE WERE IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOU IN PRESENTING THIS SPEECH. Identify two audience motives to which you tried to appeal.
5. The speech should indicate evidence of careful research – you must research AND cite in your speech at least 5 published sources of which ONLY ONE CAN BE A WEBSITE. Use APA style in documenting the sources at the end of your outline.
6. This is not a speech of personal opinion, although you ought to make it clear what your opinion is (credibility) and you must back it up with an abundance of good inductive evidence from experts who have studied and written on the subject you choose.
