The research should consist of reviewing their documents, and visiting any programs they might have that are open to visitors, and/or participating as a volunteer, and interviewing staff or participants. Note that you must be sensitive to the needs of the organization in determining which of these elements are most appropriate. We expect that some negotiation with staff may be required to frame your research tools.
Two tips for the research paper:
1. Be sure to specify the analytical framework used to assess the food project. In other words, how are you going to evaluate whether the programme/project is effective? Some students like to use the 5As framework presented in the course, others use other evaluative frameworks, including some used in project evaluations themselves. Be sure to look for any data assessing the project/programme’s impact.
2. Be sure to assess the project on two levels: a) what is it doing for it’s current client base; b) how widely applicable is this project? Could it make a difference if implemented on a wider scale? Be sure to use an analytical approach that permits assessment at these two levels.
