Task: Write a proposal for the research project you plan to undertake in this course. Your proposal should state the issue you are looking at as well as specific components of this topic that you will focus on in particular. The proposal should also include several research questions that you will attempt to answer in your final paper. If you already know some of the texts you will be looking at, or know of scholars who have explored your topic, you can mention them in the proposal as well. The proposal should be 200-300 words in length (about one double-spaced page); one of the challenges for this assignment is to stay brief, concise, and focused, so it is important that you remain within the required length. Please include the word count in parentheses at the end of the proposal.
Resources: If you do not yet have a topic in mind, you can refer back to the articles by Barker and Kellner for inspiration, and you may also want to take a look at these links:
This site lists the projects of current graduate students in a Cultural Studies program at Kansas State University.
This site lists the titles and links to full texts of several articles from the 3rd edition of Gender, Race, and Class in Media, and all of these essays explore Cultural Studies topics.
This table of contents for the 9th edition of Rereading America lists the titles of a large number of essays, most of which explore topics that would be appropriate for your research project as well.
Remember that your topic should be as narrow as possible, so that you will be able to explore it in adequate detail in your later writing assignments. For example, the topic “The Portrayal of Women” would be too general and broad, as would “The Portrayal of Women in Music.” “The Portrayal of Women in Hip Hop” would be an acceptable topic, but it would be better if you were even more specific, e.g. “The Portrayal of Women in Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines.’”
Questions? Please do not hesitate to use the “Discussion and Private Messages” feature on Laulima, where you can post questions that your classmates and I can then comment on and respond to.
After you’ve finished writing, be sure to revise and proofread your work carefully, and check that your proposal adheres to MLA formatting rules. If you need to review MLA formatting guidelines, you can refer to Purdue OWL (http://owl.english.purdue.edu) or any MLA handbook. Before turning in your proposal, please re-read this assignment sheet to ensure that your work fulfills all the assignment criteria.
Due date: Your research proposal will be due on Monday, September 16, at 6 pm. Late work will be penalized (see the syllabus for details), and work turned in more than 72 hours late will not be accepted and cannot be made up. Save your proposal as a Word document and upload it as an attachment (don’t copy and paste your work, as you will lose your formatting) to “Assignment 3.2: Proposal” under “Assignments” on Laulima.
