The goal of the written assignments is to apply the course concepts and theories to analyze the operations of a major international organization. If you’re unsure whether an organization qualifies, please use the Northwestern University library link here to check (The link takes you to the "Getting Started" page. You need to click on the letter tabs at the top to access the list).

The research report should be thought of as an evaluative report of the function and governance of the organization. In other words, you are to assess whether the IGO does what it says it does as objectively as possible. To help in showing how the organization does (or does not) fulfull its stated goals, you should look at things like the actors involved (are there actors that exercise disproportionate control in the organization? Are other actors marginalized?), the structure of the organization (does it favor or disfavor a particular group?), the ways that it interacts with states and actors, et cetera. To get a good understanding of how these organizations work in practice, you may need to use news sources, academic literature, or technical reports from the organization itself.

Each of your essays must include a short case study. That is, you need to summarize and analyze an actual case where the IGO acted to help make your point. For example, if you were analyzing the IMF, you could include a case study of recent IMF lending policy in Malawi to make a point related to the relationship between developing states and lending. If you were researching the UN Security Council, you might want to look at the case of Syria to show how the permanent seats are often at odds on contentious political issues. The important point is that you include not only abstract information about how the organization claims to operate, but also a case that shows how it operates in practice. A useful place to start researching your essay might be to choose a case study and do some research on that first. Then you will get a better idea of the relevant issues/actors/structures you want to look into further for your analysis.

Assignments should be at least five and no more than seven full pages each and should conform with the formatting requirements set forth in the syllabus. Please do not quote directly from sources excessively; use your own words and cite your sources, including between 5-10 academic sources (from journal articles or books). The easiest way to identify whether a journal article or book is an "academic" source is to see who publishes it — if it’s a university (i.e. Cambridge University Press) or professional academic association (i.e. African Studies Association), the source is generally considered academic. If you have any questions about whether a source is academic, please contact me. Spelling and grammar WILL count against your grade (you are in college, after all), so please edit before submitting them. Do not cut and paste tables, graphs or figures, but feel free to include original graphs, tables, or figures as appendix (i.e. they don’t count toward your page limit). The goal is for students to analyze independently.

Note: The essays will be turned in through a plagiarism checking software, so DO NOT copy verbatim from the article in your summary. If you have any questions, please let me know.

All assignments must be turned in before or on the due date by 11:59 p.m.

Your grade will be based on the quality and thoughtfulness of your analysis, the compliance with formatting guidelines, your spelling and grammar, and the length. If you write only 4 pages, or 80% of the required length, the highest possible grade will be a 80%, and so on. You have a lot of time to work on these, so I will not be lenient with shorter-than-required papers.
