From my observations as a learner of English as a forign language, I see that formal second language teaching should begin at early grade of primary school.
Taking teaching English situation in Saudi Arabia, where I come from. English is teach as a Foreign language at schools. The Saudi school system consists of 12 grades.
Six primary grades, three intermadte grades and three secondary grades.
In the past a little importance was given in teaching English in Saudi education system. English was introduced as a compulsory subject from the first intermadtae
grade (at the age of 12) till the secondary grade but hardly the students had given any emphasis in acquiring the efficiency in English, students leave secondary
school achieved little in terms of proficiency. Moreover, some of Saudi scholarship students who are secondary school graduates and study Bachelor overseas in coutry
like Australia, United state and Britain, began to study English again because their studing of English in Saudi school is not good enough for many reasons. The most
important reason is that because students did not receive enough exposure to the English language and they did not study the language at an early age.
Unlike the past, the status of English in Saudi Arabia is completely different now. The importance of English language grew rapidly. It is implemented as a compulsory
subject from grade four I primary school to the university level.
