Western perceptions of Muhammad: It is important to bear in mind that this is an academic research essay which must make a historical (i.e. not a normative religious) argument, supported by evidence. This assignment requires you to engage the material critically and dispassionately.
Answer the following:
How have common western European perceptions of Muhammad developed and changed through time? What are the sources of these perceptions? Are there any themes which recur (or do not recur) in western European presentations of Muhammad’s life and legacy? Why?
Whichever aspect of this question that you focus on, be sure to consult and make use of a range of relevant secondary sources.
Before writing your essay, formulate a clear thesis statement. The essay must begin with your thesis statement, and proceed to give historical evidence in favour of your stance, which you have obtained through academic research. Make sure that you have historical evidence for all of the points that you make. Be aware of the difference between primary and secondary sources, and ensure that your essay shows that you understand the distinction.
The essay is to be 10-12 pages in length (including footnotes; not including title page and bibliography). It must be double-spaced, with 1-inch margins and using twelve-point type. Use the Chicago documentary-note style for citing sources in your paper. Essays which do not have footnotes and a bibliography will not be accepted.
In writing the essay, use at least seven sources (both primary and secondary). Ensure that these secondary sources are academic sources (meaning, that they are published by university or academic presses). Be sure to use primary sources critically—do not just reproduce their claims without analyzing them.
Encyclopedia articles are good starting points for research, but they will not be counted among the seven sources that you must have. Note that while you can and should use on-line academic journals, use of other internet sources is prohibited without the express permission of the instructor.
