Analyzing Story vs. Discourse: Using “Reading Wonder Woman’s Body” as a model of story vs. discourse, prepare a 2-3 page, double-spaced analysis of the text, its story, and the discourses used to tell that story. You may choose any text you wish (such as a film, comic book, TV show, video game, etc); or, you can use one of the texts we’ve read in class. Except for your primary text, you may not use outside sources for this close reading—it’s up to you to develop, read, and interpret the text on your own.
In your paper, discuss the following: What are some of the historical, cultural, and rhetorical contexts for the text you are analyzing? How might these contexts influence the writer’s choices of story and discourse? What story is being told? What discourses does the writer use to tell the story? Why does the writer tell this particular story and use these specific discourses? What is the effect of the story on the readers/viewers?
Do not spend time summarizing the text or writing too much plot summary. Instead, assume that your audience has read the text, but has a different interpretation than you. Your job is to convince them that your analysis is valid. Use an engaging prose style and voice.
I suggest using these steps to complete the analysis:
1. Read through or view the text a few times.
2. As you are viewing/reading and reviewing the text, annotate and/or brainstorm two detailed lists: 1) a list that outlines or describes the story of the text, and 2) a list of the discourses that are used to tell that story.
3. As you are viewing/reading and reviewing the text, be sure to select specific illustrative examples and quotes to demonstrate your close reading.
4. If you are working with a visual text (film, graphic novel, advertisement, comic book,etc), take notes on the visual effects/artwork and be prepared to describe those visuals.
