In Sophocles? play Antigone, the title character is a young, aristocratic, single woman trying to honor her family and the commandments of the gods, until she is condemned to death by her uncle, Creon, the king of Thebes, for doing what she believes is right. In the 1949 movie The Heiress, an adaptation of Henry James? novel Washington Square, Catherine Sloper, a na?ve, plain, socially retarded heiress, goes against the wishes of her autocratic father, Dr. Austin Sloper, only to be deserted by her fianc?, charismatic ladies? man Morris Townsend.
