In this essay, you are going to research a controversial topic of your choice and establish a logical and well-supported claim. Since an argumentative essay requires a full explanation of the issue, a statement of your claim, and a discussion of the evidence you have provided to support your point of view, your will need to carefully research your topic and consider multiple perspectives, including opposing views, to offer a rhetorically sound argument. Be sure to explain your topic and your claim thoroughly by taking the rhetorical context into consideration (genre, purpose, audience, contexts, style, tone, implications). Ask yourself what is at stake with this issue. What is affected by it, or who stands to gain/lose something from the issue as it stands? What are the causes and effects of the issue? Have a clear vision of your purpose and audience so you know how to wield the three rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) to achieve your goal. State your thesis clearly; furthermore, make sure you have an accurate reading of your sources’ arguments so you can represent them fairly. Use the information of your sources as evidence by either affirming or opposing the viewpoint being presented by the author, or explain the strengths and weaknesses presented by your sources in order to strengthen your own argument.
Composition
You will be using at least five (but no more than seven) sources for this essay. Furthermore, one of your sources must be a visual argument (with the full potential for rhetorical analysis), a TED Talk, or a primary (first-person) source. If you have questions about this, please feel free to ask). I encourage you to use paraphrases and direct quotes in your analysis, but of course, make sure to include proper in-text citations. I’m sure this goes without saying, but you will need to include a separate “Works Cited” page, as well.
Purpose and Audience
Your argument needs to be stated clearly and you need to provide ample detail to support your claim using the arguments of others. Your essay should have a coherent and logical organization that distinguishes one source from the next AND from your own ideas. Keep in mind that you should aim to present and analyze each argument fairly and critically. Don’t shy away from using an authoritative voice in this paper, but try to maintain a third-person point of view for the majority of the essay.
