When we respond to a text critically, we respond not just to the ideas presented by the author, but also to the logical coherence of the ideas and the stylistic and structural techniques used by the author to present his/her ideas. Your critical response should be well-focused and well-organized. You may summarize, paraphrase, and include short quotations in your paper. You may consider the following structure for your paper:

A summary of the author’s point of view, including a brief statement of the author’s thesis, an outline of the important “facts” and lines of reasoning the author uses to support his main idea, a summary of the author’s implicit or explicit values, and his conclusion and suggestions
An overall evaluation of his work (YOUR thesis statement) including an assessment of the facts presented on the basis of correctness, relevance, and whether or pertinent facts were omitted, an evaluation or judgment of the logical consistency of the author’s argument, an evaluation an appraisal of the author’s values in terms of how you feel or by an accepted standard.
An evaluation of the style and structure of the article including an assessment of whether the stylistic and structural techniques have been successful in conveying the main idea of the article.
