Question: Choose a community of practice that is oriented to social change (a social movement, an activist group
or initiative, a campaign, etc.) and write a research essay that:
explores in depth the group, its mandate/goals, history, and activities
examines the power relations or institutions the group is working to address/resist
examines the groups communicative practices (how does it use technology,
media, or communication?)
discusses the significance of the group for our contemporary era (or the era in
which it was active) and/or of its communicative practices
identify the challenges the group faces in achieving its goals
Your essay should address all of these areas, but you must come up with an argument in the form of a thesis
statement (for example: In this essay, I will argue that……). The rest of your essay should be structured so
as to support the argument you are making.
I have posted resources for how to write strong thesis statements on Blackboard on the assignment page for the
essay and proposal.
You can select a group or organization we have studied in class, a larger initiative/social movement (anti-war,
feminist, labour, alternative media, etc.) or a more specific group, such as Anonymous, Wikileaks, Strike Debt.,
etc). If you are unsure about a group please come speak to Prof. Cohen to brainstorm ideas. Generally, you should
not be selecting a corporation, a large established institution, or a group linked to powerful institutions such
as religion, the state, or the private sphere.
Required sources: You must cite at least 7 sources in your essay: four must be scholarly sources (academic
articles from journals or books), three can be legitimate web-based or other sources (newspaper articles,
reports, etc., not Wikipedia unless you are writing about Wikipedia). You may use any course readings and
materials as additional sources to supplement the eight required sources.
