1: Imagine that you are a public health nurse working with John Snow in 1854. Considering the century and the
population of people you would be working with how would you engage in outreach to inform the people about the
water?
A public health nurse working in 1854 would have to use available resources and ways applicable at that time to
outreach to inform the people about the water. As per Truglio-Londrigan and Lewenson, the process of outreach is
not a simple one. The public health nurse must take into account the specific population of interest, the
demographics of that population, the particular problem that needs to be addressed, where they live, the
resources available to them, that particular populations’ values and beliefs, how they live in the world, and
whether or not they want to be found (Trunglio-Londrigan and Lewenson, 2013).
The first step wound be to find out how the outreach will be carried out after the target population has been
identified. If I were the public nurse helping John Snow, I would probably outreach the community by walking in
the community, using a mobile van to go to the community, knocking on doors, or making an announcement in
newspaper or posting a printed or handwritten pamphlet in the area to make people aware of the disease, its
source and urging the public to get treated and use preventive precautions. Another method I would use would be
launch various awareness programs such as rally, public announcement in a public gathering utilizing a well known
leader or public figure to inform the public.
2: How would the public health of 1854 attempt to use social media of the day?
I can imagine how limited the source of social media was in 1854. The public health would have to use the sources
such as newspaper to spread the message. Press release, printed advertisements, health promotion activities, and
billboard at local level could be used as a social media to send the information to the public.
3: Imagine that you are a public health nurse today and that there is an outbreak similar to but different than
the one experienced during John Snow?s day. Considering the century we are now in the population of people how
would you engage in outreach?
I believe it is a lot easier on today’s date to engage in outreach as compared to that in 1854 since there are
more media and more access to the media by people. Still, the importance of knowing the target population is
critical (Trunglio-Londrigan and Lewenson, 2013). The public health nurse may have a plan for an outreach process
that is well developed and the population is identified and accessible, but if the message is developed in a way
that is not congruent with the population, the message will miss its mark (Trunglio-Londrigan and Lewenson,
2013). Therefore, I would find a way to go where the targeted population is, or send message through a medium
which is more popular in that community (television ad? Internet or local newspaper?). If the budget allowed, I
would also install monitors that would play a video with information about the contaminated water in public
places such as bus station, gas stations, and outside a supermarket.
4: How would you the public health nurse use social media to ?get the word out??
I could use social media such as facebook, tweeter by making a public page and posting informational posts,
videos, and links to share information to the public. In today’s technologically dependent society, social media
has emerged as a popular source of health information (Trunglio-Londrigan and Lewenson, 2013). A web-based
advertizements informing about the outbreak, its source, signs and symptoms, treatments and prevention measures
would also be helpful in raising awareness about the disease to the community.
