You have joined a medium-sized British Multi-national Company (MNC) as an Assistant Manager in their Leadership & Management Development Department, based in their UK Headquarters in Hertford.
In January, they appointed a new Global Human Resources Director, Brigitte Lagarde. Her previous role was as HR & Talent Manager for LVMH in Paris. The programme?s aim was to develop the middle & senior managers of the future by sending them on a posting to one of the international subsidiaries for two years; before bringing them back to a more senior role in the UK. They also attended a 1-week generic Leadership Programme run by a mid-sized consulting firm in London, before they moved internationally.
As the business has expanded, the number of expatriate managers on the programme has grown to 48, and Brigitte expects to add another 12 people to it this year. However, she has discovered a number of problems with the existing programme. From her initial investigation of the HRM database she has identified the following:
– 25% of the expatriate managers have returned home early due to dissatisfaction
– Over 35% of the expatriates who remained in post were considered by the local directors to be under-performing compared to management expectations of them
(the policy was to send ?high-flyers? as part of their development)
– Around 30% of those who completed their postings, left within a year of returning to the UK or France.
The previous HR Director who set up the programme, left over a year ago. An Interim HR Director covered the post until the new Global HR Director was appointed in January. Revenues generated outside the UK will grow to over 50% of the company?s business by the end of this year. So the CEO has said that it is crucial that this programme is re-vitalised, so that it can make a major contribution to their global growth strategy.
