1.You have to come up with a demographic that is as specific as possible because different groups will value different things. Please read what I wrote to a student in my other 205 class as it will give you a good idea of what you need to be thinking about:
“Your target audience is HUGE. There are FAR too many variables with men AND women between 20-60 (40 year age gap). There is just no way you could create an effective ad that would appeal to such a large and varied group of people. This assignment is about audience and tone. You need a specific audience and then figure out what would appeal to them. For example, let’s say you are a specific cookware company that wants to go after a new market. Who are most buyers of cookware? Do some research but for example’s sake I will say it is women 35 plus, generally Caucasian, middle to upper middle class income (all that information is called a “demographic”). So you create an ad that appeals to the values of white middle class women who are in a comfortable income range. What they value will be very different from how you would market to an income conscious demographic (working class). Let’s say you wanted to go after men. Who would be more likely to buy cookware? Single men or married men? Younger (college age) or middle aged? This is what it means to create a “demographic.” This is what I want everyone to do.”
Also, it would be a mistake to expect that you will only do one consultation draft. Unlike the previous assignment, in order to refine your demographic target and your choice of medium for the advertisement, this will be real consulting with multiple short discussions before you even get to a “draft.” Spend some time at this level and it will save you a lot of time and needless work at the “feedback” level.
