The purpose of this assessment is to develop your skills in researching a critical question and forming an argument. Below are four (4) essay questions. Select one (1) question and write your response in the form of an essay with reference to relevant texts that you have identified in readings related to the course, or other authoritative material you have sourced yourself. The essay should consist of no more than 30% quotation or paraphrase and must include statements written in your own words reflecting your position on the issue as well as your reading around the issue. You should use the referencing system required by your particular study discipline ie. APA, Footnote or Harvard (author-date). Please discuss with your lecturer if you are unclear.
An essay differs from personal reflection as it is written for a public audience while personal reflections tend to be written more informally for the author’s own record. In personal reflections the writer uses ‘I’ whereas in essays, this is to be avoided and the author should use third person.
Essays generally require the author to state a position, a thesis or an argument in relation to an issue (introduction) and then introduce supporting points with evidence in the form of quotes or paraphrase (body paragraphs), then conclude by summarising the main points presented in support of the thesis (conclusion).
