Case Description:
Children’s Hospital and Clinics in Minneapolis, Minnesota is a major tertiary care hospital for children, formed in 1994 from a merger of Minneapolis Children’s Medical Center and Children’s Hospital-St. Paul. Julie Morath, recently hired as the Chief Operating Officer, launches a major initiative to improve patient safety at the hospital, and begins to transform the entire organization. This case documents how general managers can design and lead transformational initiatives that reshape an organization’s processes and culture, thereby creating an environment that enhances the firm’s learning and problem-solving capabilities. Through examining the activities and challenges the leader faces in each phase of the change process, we can learn about different skills required at each stage while also developing insights on the nature of the health care industry.
