The Assignment: Music Worth Knowing
Choose music created and/or performed in the United States whose reason(s) they are worth knowing are drawn from the last 15 years (1997 to date). You may center your study on a genre, style, artist, group, technological or aesthetic change, or an idea about music, but you need to have a piece within the category as an example. (In exceptional cases, more than one piece may be used.) The music may be older than 15 years, but its value for this project must be recent.
You will need to explain why the music should draw our attention. The reason(s) can include aesthetic or artistic value, but it/they must incorporate contextual reasons as well, which will necessitate research to understand the context at the time. But note that the music is not necessarily the center of the essay: it may be any of the categories listed above, of which the music serves as a chosen example.
The paper needs to include musical description, analysis, or commentary as you have previously done. You will also need to research the topic to have sufficient and correct knowledge in order to make your point.
From the general paper guidelines: Avoid hype. Enthusiasm about an artist, a style, or music in general is of course acceptable. The goal here, however, is to distinguish between information and value judgment and avoid presenting the latter as the former. Nor is a summary biography of an artist alone likely to serve the assignment well.
