So far in this course, we have looked in some detail at the contemporary issues in sentencing & corrections in the state of Arizona, as they have historically developed. This state has been especially resistant to moving away from the ?mass incarceration? model that it pioneered, unlike other jurisdictions (See this recent Justice Strategies report for details). In 5-7 pages, please analyze and develop policy recommendations that might work in this state by:
1.Providing an introductory section that offers a detailed overview/description of the current state of Arizona?s sentencing and corrections policies. For this, you will likely want to do some added research to update and learn more about the current state of affairs in the state (including the above linked report).
2.Specifically delineating how the sentencing policies at issue have impacted corrections in the state. In other words, draw the connections between sentencing and corrections within the Arizona case.
3.Developing a set of research/evidence-based policy reform recommendations that address one or more of the problems that you have described. These recommendations must be within the bounds of constitutional mandates, and should be politically viable in the state of Arizona.
This paper needs to cite outside works above and beyond our course readings (which should also be integrated in the paper). The outside sources can address any/all of the sub-components of the paper, including the substantive problem itself, scholarship on the connections between sentencing policy and correctional problems like overcrowding/mass incarceration, and scholarship on policy reform and ?what works? in sentencing and correctional policy. Given the scope of the issues in this state, you might well concentrate on only a subset of policy solutions.
