The victim is a rich, heartless, & miserly old men who according to John, ‘deserves to die.’ John is not so much interested in getting his money as he is in righting the fact that the old man possesses enormous wealth while many go hungry. John knows that murder is morally wrong but he feels that since the old man had made his money thru his political dealings in order to get to the top, he did not deserve the protection of the law. Therefore, John feels that there would be general agreement that everyone would benefit form his demise. he proceeds to do the act & keeps his promise to himself to distribute the old man’s money to the poor. While he fears being found out, when he is, the people not only forgive him but elect him their new political leader for having freed them from a tyrant. Within a few years, however, he realizes that unless he has absolute power, he won’t be able to put into place a just political system. he convinces the people to give him the power for life since in order to change the people’s consciousness in favor of justice, it might take several generations. Once in power, he governs so wisely & justly that at his death, every citizen felt as if he/she lost a parent. (sovereignty is a crucial point for Rousseu)
