In “The Social Context of Storytelling, 3” Schank and Abelson write:“two people might be expected to relate events quite differently, depending, among other things, upon their individual perspectives of . . .what the listener is interested in, and what the events reveal about themselves” Additionally the stories we tell are strongly affected by culture and by those to whom we tell our stories.

A. In Akutagawa’s “In a Grove," choose one character and explain how the version of the story told by that character is an attempt at self-definition, influenced by the teller’s culture and by the listener(s). (Quote at least 2 times from the text of “In a Grove ” and at least once citing additional research about medieval Japanese culture.)
Organization:
Your paper should contain at least 5 paragraphs. In your first paragraph, make clear what the focus of your paper will be. In the body of your paper, summarize the important details of the version you have chosen to analyze, then discuss the probable role of the listener, how the story defines the teller, and the role of culture . Conclusions (the last thing your reader reads) are important and should comment on the importance of what you have said, not just trail off or end abruptly.
Quotation: Your paper must contain at least 2 quotations from the story, chosen as support for the point(s) you are trying to make. Additionally you should include 1 quotation from a reliable Internet source that helps to clarify the story. Quotations should be in context and demonstrate that you know how to use quotations to support a point. In other words they must be introduced and commented upon.
