Course information: This course introduces students to works on colonialism and post colonialism from the Caribbean’s, India and the Indian Diaspora, South-East Asia, Europe, the U.S., and Hong Kong. We will cover issues of trauma in war and imperialism, the destruction and reinvention of culture and history, the issues of colonialism, imperialism, decolonization and demineralization, slavery, exile and the Diaspora, the problems of nationalism and cultural identity, of Euro centrism, Sino centrism and localism, of sexism and racism, and of inter-racial relations not just between the West and the rest, but also among peoples of color. We will also look at the strategies of borrowing, adopting and adapting deployed by postcolonial thinkers around the following notions: the unconscious, the self, the other, hybridist, subalterneity, transnational’s, creolization.

In Singapore’s nation building years, the government enforced monolingualism of British English, a post-colonial legacy, with the intention of bridging the language barriers between the various ethic groups. Yet counter to this official linguistic movement, Singlish originated from the grassroots’ use of pidgin-like forms of English for cross-ethic communication and evolved into ‘the other’, an independent language of the streets. Its use at street level can be perceived as the people’s un-confrontational protests against the official transcript. It is evidence to the resistance of the complexities of the ethnic identities and their defining linguistic differences that refuse to be erased by the false universality of monolingualism.
Thus, this essay enters the debate of post-colonial agency by acknowledging the agency within Singlish, an English-based Creole language spoken in Singapore. We hope to also make conscious the negotiations of power between the lingua franca, privileged by the Government, and Singlish, a living collective of the Singaporean culture. Such as, the changing subject of “the other”: the fluctuation between a colonial condition that affect self-policing of the use of standard English, thus making Singlish ‘the other’; and the nationalistic condition which recognizes the genius involved in the makings and use of Singlish, thus making British English the imposed ‘other’.
Singlish in Singapore is and can be an example of how a nation can reclaim its agency and re-negotiate its identity with its former colonial masters.

We should embrace the approach of self-discovery and to reexamine how the colonial ways and their social systems have forced us to “denigrate ourselves” and embrace instead their sense of aesthetics as aesthetics.
