[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Description: Students will read an article from Science News (2010, Feb. 3) describing a controversial study conducted in 1998 that triggered panic about the use of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR) and then discuss the article with classmates.

Outcomes: As a result of completing this discussion forum assignment, students will be able to: describe the controversy of the MMR vaccine and autism; compare research methods across studies; draw accurate conclusions about research relevant to child psychology.

Instructions:
Please read the article in its entirety – the link follows: http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/56008/title/Deleted_Scenes__Journal_retracts_flawed_study_linking_MMR_vaccine_and_autism
Please answer all of the following questions using only the article and information below as assigned. You may cite the textbook as well if needed.
Be sure to engage in a discussion with at least 2 different classmates about this assignment. See grading rubric for an example of quality replies.

Assigned questions:
What underlies the controversy about the MMR vaccine and autism?:
What are significant factors to consider when coming to conclusions about causation and the research conducted by Dr. Wakefield?
Dr. Wakefield’s study from which he warned against the MMR vaccine included 12 children. Other studies from various countries followed. Why was it important to run larger scale studies in other countries(include quoted material below in coming to your conclusion)? What does the comparison of Wakefield’s study with the findings from the other studies tells about MMR and autism?
“Anders Hviid and colleagues at the Statens Serum Institut analyzed data on all the Danish children born between 1991 and 1998, over half a million. They compared two groups, those who had received the MMR triple shot and those who hadn’t. Then they counted the cases of autism in each group and calculated the autism rate. They found no difference. Children who didn’t get the shot had the same risk of developing autism as those who did. The team published the findings in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Other studies carried out by researchers in Sweden, Britain, Finland and the U.S. also found no association between MMR and autism. Additional evidence came from Japan. The Japanese changed their vaccine schedule in 1993, replacing the MMR triple shot with three separate vaccinations. But following the change, autism rates did not fall. In fact, they appeared to rise, thus making the triple shot an unlikely cause of autism.

What are the ethical problems with Dr. Wakefield’s study?
Why can we conclude with confidence that the MMR vaccine does not cause autism?
