Assignment 2: Leadership Assessment
Due Week 8 and worth 300 points

Organizational leaders are expected to create realistic visions for their companies and the employees they guide, but these visions often have characteristics or properties that differ. There is, therefore, the realization that there is no one best leadership style to guide employees toward accomplishing organizational goals.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:
Analyze the leadership style(s) of a senior executive (CEO, CFO, COO, Director, etc.) in your current or previous organization who made a positive or negative impact on you.
Analyze the organizational structure and culture of the company for which you work (or would like to work) to determine its approach to team development, and whether that approach helped to enhance your relationship skills in the workplace.
Evaluate the performance of your selected leader based on his or her ethical conduct and effective communication to determine if this leader was successful in motivating and empowering you to improve on your work performance. Explain your answer.
Determine three (3) best practices organizational leaders can use to motivate employees and discuss their potential benefits.
Discuss some of the challenges leaders encounter when managing diversity and how diversity helps business organizations better compete in global markets.
Develop an effective business strategy to address the challenges and issues you have identified above.
Use at least five (5) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
Explain the principal theories of leadership and motivation, and describe the fundamental considerations in managing and motivating individual and group behavior.
Explain the multiple aspects of the managerial planning process and the application of various business and corporate-level strategies.
Assess how various leadership styles fit cultural differences and effectively operate in global markets.
Analyze the importance of ethical behavior to an organization’s culture and the new ethical dilemmas created by globalization
Describe actions to improve communications, manage conflict, develop strong organizational culture, and improve the ethical behavior in organizations.
Use technology and information resources to research issues in management concepts.
Write clearly and concisely about management concepts using proper writing mechanics.

visual arts exhibition Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

As part of this course, you are required to attend a presentation, performance or visual arts exhibition of your choice and write a 4-5 page paper about the experience. You must attend the event during this semester. Previously attended events do not qualify for this assignment. Specific criteria for this assignment follow.

Cultural Event Opportunities

For the purposes of this class, a cultural event is defined as a visit to an ART museum or gallery or attendance at a play, a concert, or a poetry reading. If you would like to use an event that does not conform to these general categories, consult me prior to attending. Videos, movies at a movie theater, and sporting events are not applicable for this project.

The goal of this project is to have you apply what you are learning about how to view and think about human creative expression. It is one way I have of assessing your learning. As such, it is not a pure research project, although research is required to support your thesis.

Prior to attending an event, you must get my approval. After your event is approved, you will write a 4-5 page typed paper (double-spaced with one inch margins) that includes the following elements:

1. A summary and description of the event/museum visit. The summary should be no more than one half to one full page of your paper.

2. A demonstration that you see the connection between culture and product (three pages minimum). Show how aspects of the work reflect cultural ideas and attitudes of the time in which it was created or show how the work connects with contemporary ideas, values, and beliefs. Students who attend a symphony, a dance concert, or a museum must can not write about more than three pieces of music, dances, or art. In all cases, the paper must reflect on the inter-relationship between the art and the period from which it emerged. In other words, show how the art is a product of the culture in which it was created OR show why it continues to resonate with 21st century audiences.

This section will also include the research you have done to support your ideas about cultural connections. Research may also offer additional information about your subject in terms of style or artist—however, you are cautioned not to rely too heavily on source material that offers standard critical commentary on a work of art.

· Your research should include at least three academically sound sources. Bewares such sources as Wikipedia and Encarta.

Research the work of art, not the artist’s life. Biographies will not be graded.

Apply Modern Language Association rules for citation and documentation. This means I expect properly formatted parenthetical citations for paraphrased and quoted material and a complete Works Cited page.

CAUTION! Critical analysis of an artistic style unrelated to the culture in which it was created or to our current culture will not fulfill the assignment. Artist biographies are not accepted as cultural event projects, so do not spend a great deal of time researching the artist. Use critical commentary and biographical information only if it is necessary to the development of your thesis.

4. Your response to the aesthetic qualities and your evaluation of the event. Discuss why you feel as you do about your chosen event and its connection to culture. Please consult your text’s Preface for ways of discussing the arts (one page).

The Cultural Event paper may be submitted any time after approval of event; it must be submitted prior to the final due date on the course calendar.

Less than 4 pages will result in a letter grade deduction of .5
Incorrect source citation and documentation will result in letter grade deduction of .5

Academic Honesty
As stated above, this project requires research. You are required to cite and document sources according to the Modern Language Association (MLA) rules for documentation and citation. Paraphrased, summarized, and quoted material obtained from sources must be documented.

A cultural event submitted without documentation and citation will receive a 0.0

Evaluate the claim that good health is achieved simply by repairing the body once it goes wrong Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

(1500- 2000 words)

Deadline Date: Deadline; 13th December 2012

Assessment weighting: 30%

Description of assignment:

The assessed work consists of a written discussion essay of 1500-2000 words. The option to opt out of this essay or to undertake an alternative assessment is not available. This essay needs to be considered from an inter-disciplinary or synoptic perspective and thus evaluated from a biological, nutritional, psychological and sociological perspective. Rather than deal with each area individually try to construct your discussion in such a way as to clearly identify the interactions/overlaps between them, such as how perhaps the environment links with the biological, or how aspects of control and lifestyle interact, and the resultant outcomes that the disciplines have on one another.

Some key areas to think about

• What are the title / question asking you?
• What assumptions does the title make and what evidence might this title draw upon to argue its case, what arguments might the question make, or which position would this question take on good health?
• What are the key words and what do these seem to want you to do?
• Are there other views/materials/ that challenge the original, and if so what ways, how do they differ, and are there some aspects these might have in common?
• Are you being asked to reach some sort of conclusion?
• How might class/income play out in terms of health, would psychology impact what you eat/reasons for eating/not eating well?
• How might these overlap with lifestyle choices/opportunities
• What might be the psychological/nutritional results of these
• Might there be different outcomes for different socio-economic groups
• Are their hidden factors that link these apparently unrelated areas?
• How might concepts like social exclusion impact upon this topic,
• Does your discussion raise further issues or flag up social policy, and have there been any recent government initiatives that have tried to address this
• Phrasing in your words the overall findings/evaluation of the discussion
• Is this question really about much more than the title suggests, and if this is the case, what further research needs to be done?

Introduction:

Introductions – keep them short and to the point, write them in a way to encourage someone to read it. In simple terms, keep it snappy, fresh and lively. Sometimes the incorporation of interesting facts / points (this is sometimes referred to as headline grabbing) can also serve to interest potential readers.

Avoid introductions where you tell the reader what you are going to look at, why and how. These rambling introductions telling the reader what you are going to do are pointless, as it will be covered in the script. Also you waste valuable words, better spent answering the question posed. One important thing to remember not just in the introduction, but throughout, is to address your reader as an informed reader – you do not have to explain every technical term or point you make in great detail. An example is set out below.

Main text:

Be structured. That means:
• Avoid just making lists or telling the reader about concepts: you have to explain how different concepts work together and interrelate to define health.
• Do not go from one topic to another then back again.
• Avoid extensive discussion on just one topic – remember to aim for a balanced discussion using the four topic areas of Biology, Nutrition, Psychology and Sociology.
• Aim to discuss these 4 areas together rather than tackle them one by one or separate them by ‘listing’
• Keep the word count between 1500 and 2000 – you are allowed to exceed the word count by no more than 10%. Essays with word counts under lower figure above usually won’t allow the author to fully tackle the question.
• Be precise and concise – avoid using excessive words or words or phrases that have more than one meaning. Just state the facts. Don’t use text speak. Don’t try and write ‘academically’ you’re not a professor (yet) – just be you!
• Even when discussing facts, avoid complex long-winded sentences. Avoid waffle.
• Reach your word count with information, facts, figures and a brilliant conclusion, save a key point or clever conclusion till the end
• Avoid over use of quotes – only quote someone if what they said was of such great importance and of direct implication to the strength of your argument that you can not put it into your own words.
• Avoid ‘I think’ or ‘I feel’ – it is only appropriate to write in the third person.

In respect of the above, ‘proof read’ sounds obvious, but it is often neglected and this is reflected in some sentences / paragraphs making no sense at all. It is a good idea to get someone else to read your paper, especially if they do not know your subject area themselves. Better still, write it 2 or 3 weeks before submission, put it away in a drawer then re-read it a week before submission. You will then be surprised by what you will pick up in errors and waffle. Reading the assignment aloud also works well in picking up errors or repetition.

There are no excuses for poor spelling as you are all word processing the essay, but watch out for the errors the spell checker won’t pick up: there and their, draw and drawer, throw and through.

To help you construct a sound structure / argument, use the PEER approach as a guide:
Each Paragraph must contain Evidence (this means reading – papers, core texts from the module guide, web resources, etc) Evaluation (this means critical analysis of publications read and of their arguments and conclusions). References / Bibliography (everything you write must have come from an academic source). You must use the reference section to show material that you have paraphrased from or quoted. List materials that you have looked at in the Bibliography. Follow the link on the module guide to the University’s library ‘Harvard referencing guide.

Conclusion:
This should pull all the areas discussed together but importantly it must highlight in your own words the overall findings / evaluation of the discussion.

State the word count at the end

References
• You should avoid the BBC, Wikipedia (and other similar sites) as they did not undertake the research themselves – always find the original source. This will either be a book or a review paper. Primary publications are also very good, but you will get used to using these as time goes on.
• Only use academically credible sources. Whatever you write must be referenced properly in text and at the end. Failure to do so is gross academic misconduct.
• Do not reference lectures or lecturers lecture notes.
• Download the Harvard Reference Guide from the library – or use the single sheet Referencing Crib Sheet
