This assignment gives you the opportunity to write only about Peter Pan, or only the poetry anthology, and to think about one of these as a whole.
If you choose Peter Pan, you will probably find it easiest to concentrate on two or three characters or scenes. You might, for instance, decide to focus on how the everyday lives of the children in the Darling household are depicted, or on play in Neverland. Alternatively you could decide to concentrate on the Lost Boys, or Wendy and Peter. You will find relevant material in the critical essays in Section 5 of Reader 2, Classic Texts and Contemporary Trends. Before you begin writing you might consider a few further questions. Is there a single view of childhood in the play? Do various subsequent interpretations, for instance film versions, all take the same standpoint? Does Peter Pan himself embody nostalgia? Does the play adopt or challenge a sentimental view of childhood as a time of security and freedom from anxiety? In conclusion, consider the extent to which the evidence you have chosen is typical of the whole text, and whether you agree that Peter Pan reflects nostalgia for a dreamy, carefree childhood.
If you choose the anthology it would be advisable to make your own careful selection of poems to focus on, and say why you chose them. There is no upper or lower limit but you will not have space for detailed discussion of a large number of poems, so you could either select a few for close analysis or take a broader view of a relatively larger set. Remember the question asks about the anthology, so either way you will also need to think about the extent to which you can claim your poems are typical or representative. Taken together, to what extent do they reflect nostalgia for childhood as a state of playful innocence? Do they depict children as unaware of trouble and hardship? Do they deal with play or are the poems in themselves playful? Are there poems which deliberately foreshadow knowledge of the ‘rough wayfaring existence’ that may lie ahead? Do they let the child reader ‘doze’ or seek to warn about the future? You might wish to conclude by considering whether it is reasonable to describe all the poems in the anthology, as a whole, in the same way. The Study Guide and the essays in Section 3 of Reader 1, Approaches and Territories, will be useful for thinking about nostalgia in relation to childhood as well as for analysing your own choice of poems. Part 2 of the DVD-ROM and track no. 8 on DVD 1 could also be useful for your analysis. You can incorporate relevant images if you wish but you do not need to include the poems in full.
