[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Read Candide by Voltaire and Tempest by Shakespeare.
Analyze philosophically
Instructions: Answer each question below, in its entirety.
Type or laser print. Discussions, debates, drafts welcome.
Use any and all relevant sources, with proper citation.

1. Why does Prospero (Tempest, V. 1. 60-62) vow to drown my book?
Should he? Which one(s)? Shall we drown (bury) Shakespeare, too?

2. If this isnt the best of all possible worlds, what does it lack, want, or need?
Isnt Candide proof of divine perfection? Doesnt Voltaires art refute itself?

3. In an interview with Peter Garner (2007), Werner Herzog
explained his decision to watch Wrestlemania as follows:

My answer is the poet must not avert his eyes from whats going on in the world. In order to understand whats going on, you have to face it.

What does the poet [writer, artist, composer] see? Why cant she be blind?
What does the listener [viewer, reader] do? Why must she be [like] a poet?

Cultural Immersion and Socio-historical Research Presentation Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Identify a culture you might encounter as a teacher which you have very little knowledge about and would like to further explore (you may select the same cultural group you chose for the journal activity in weeks 1, 2, and 3). In a 10-15 slide PowerPoint presentation, you will address the following:

a) You will need to design and carry out one experiential activity as part of your report. You may use A Study of Cambodia and the Cambodian-American Experience from your text for inspiration, but your research will not need to be nearly as in-depth (unless you decide to continue your research as the teachers did here beyond this class). This section of your PowerPoint presentation must include the following information:

An explanation of your experiential activity including:
What you did
Some of the preconceived notions you had going into the activity
What you learned
Forms of intercultural communication you might need to use with members of this group
Some ways you hope to continue learning about this group beyond the course
Examples of cultural immersion activities include, but are not limited to:

Visit a Middle-Eastern, Asian, Indian or Mexican Market and prepare a meal using the ingredients you find
Watch and critique a Bollywood film, viewing it (as much as possible) from a non-western perspective
Change your news source to a Middle Eastern network like Al Jazeera for a week
Visit a cultural center, interfaith dialogue or spend an afternoon with someone of another culture/religion/ethnicity to learn more about that world view
Familiarize yourself with and listen to the latest Latino, Hip Hop pop-music from the culture you are studying
Attend a Pow Wow or dance performance from members of that cultural group
Attend a meeting of the Gay-Straight Alliance
Visit the areas where the children you are researching live (provided they are safe)
Download a demo of ?JAWS,? a screen-reader for the blind and try surfing the net blindfolded
b) In addition to the experiential part of this assignment, you are to research the socio-cultural history of the group you are studying. Summarize the history and explain their current reality/challenges in the US. Apply this information to what you learned from your experience. Include ways you can be more sensitive to this background in your curriculum and classroom. You must include at least 2-3 resources to support your ideas. All in-text citations and reference page must be formatted according to APA guidelines.

* please note-
the culture I’m encountering is Spanish-Mexican.
Please discuss Food, music and spend an afternoon with someone of another culture/religion/ethnicity to learn more about that world view.

Understanding and analysis Comics and Manga Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

ICS 2103 – Understanding Comics and Manga
Final Take home Exam

You will be required to answer one question from Section I and 4 questions from Section II. There is choice within each section. Your entire exam submission should not exceed 10 pages. Any appendices are extra beyond the maximum page limit. Although you are expected to rely primarily on course material, you should include a bibliography that lists any sources used in composing your answer.

Section I: You must answer ONE of these questions. Each of these options involves conducting an analysis of your own and using your data in the answer. Your answer should be about 4-6 pages and is worth up to 20 marks. You should submit any data sheets as appendices to show your work.

1.1) Panel transitions analysis: Consider and discuss the 6 types of closure facilitated by panel transitions which McCloud outlined in Understanding Comics. Tally up and calculate the proportion of the types of panel transitions (a data sheet is posted on Desire2Learn) used in 1 sample of manga and 1 sample from a comic book. Compare the results for your samples and compare with McCloud’s results discussed on pg 75-81 of Understanding Comics.

1.2) Genre analysis: Consider the role of genre in understanding comics and manga. Compare comics from two different genres and discuss your results. You might find the reading by Coogan (posted on the course readings page on Desire2learn) useful in your answer. The genre analysis handout, which you might find helpful, is posted to the Desire2Learn exam materials page.

1.3) Manga analysis: Consider the differences between manga that are directed at different audiences. Compare a sample of shōjo and a sample of shonen manga and discuss your results. You might consider the gender, genre or stylistic distinctions. NOTE: There are a number samples posted on the exam materials page on Desire2Learn.

1.4 Gender analysis: Consider the ways the gender is represented in manga and comics. Compare a sample of shōjo manga, a sample of shonen manga and a comic and discuss your results. Do manga or comics seem more gendered? In what ways?

NOTES:
1) Your samples of manga and comics should comprise at least 10 pages (ideally a whole manga episode or a full single-issue comic book, but that may be too much material to cover for this exam).
2) There are a number of samples and links to samples posted on the Desire2learn exam materials module page.

3) You should include a bibliography that lists any outside sources used in composing your answers.

Section II: Answer any FOUR (4) of these questions. In this section there are a number of questions which focus on the topics we have covered this term. You should rely upon your text, assigned readings, lecture notes and any relevant video material to compose your answer. The expectation is that you will answer using course material for this final exam. Your answers for this section should be comprised of about 2-4 pages. Each question can be answered in about a page. Your answer for this section is worth up to 20 marks = 5 marks per question.

2.1) Briefly outline one (1) consequence of distributing manga and comics in mass market bookstores?

2.2) How are films and anime different from comics and manga? Be specific and use examples to illustrate your answer.

2.3) Discuss some of the ways that gender structures the manga industry, how does that compare with North American comics?

2.4) Using the video excerpts that we watched in class, draw some comparisons between fans of manga/anime in the US and otaku in Japan

2.5) Discuss one (1) of the challenges to having more digital distribution of comics.

2.6) How have women been represented in superhero comics? Has this changed in more recent comics?

2.7) Discuss one (1) of the criticisms that readers have made of official manga translations?

2.8) Compare the distribution systems for manga in Japan and comics in North America.

2.9) Briefly outline one (1) of the significant changes in the translated manga industry that resulted from the conflict over scanlation aggregators.

2.10) Describe any one (1) of the fan practices outlined by Henry Jenkins and illustrate it with an example of activities related to manga otaku or comic book fans.

2.11) How does closure help with the depiction of non-visual information such as sound in comics? Use examples to illustrate your answer.

2.12) Discuss the origins of the genre of boys’ love manga? What is their target readership?

For Section 1 is 5 pages and section 2 is 3 pages

ebooks, ereaders, and other devices that can read ebooks Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

For this project, you will have the opportunity to integrate everything that has been covered and apply it to a standards war that is currently underway.

STEP ONE: Review the learning objectives for each of the course modules and the lessons located at the end of the chapters in Information Rules(ISBN: 0-87584-863-x) to help you develop the list of issues to look for. Do this before you begin your research. You will need to be thinking like an economist as you do your research on the emergence of e-books, the people who read them, the choices of devices and ways to read them, and the viable alternatives.

STEP TWO: Read the articles, follow the links, and do additional research, as needed.

A must read to set the stage is "The Future of Reading" the cover story for the March 8, 2010 issue of FORTUNE magazine. And, for an article suggesting that printed textbooks are not about to be replaced by e-books, see "The Device Versus the Book" (05/01/10). Think about how you read books.

The number of choices has moved from just a few to quite a few. You can find comparisons of the many e-readers at both Wkipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-book_readers) and eBook Reader Review (http://ebook-reader-review.toptenreviews.com/). Use them as jumping off points for your further research. Be sure that your knowledge of this market is current — the holidays are a prime time for new product introductions!

Keep in mind that recent developments have added non-dedicated devices to the ways in which one can read e-books, including the iPad, which some analysts have suggested is a very real threat to e-readers.

STEP THREE: Report what you found and interpret your findings based on the economic concepts and ideas covered in this course.

Describe the current situation. You should include a brief description of each of the major contenders as well as the various players in the market. Hint: What are the ways that e-book content can be read?
Analyze and explain the strategies being used by the various players using the frameworks developed in Shapiro and Varian.
Predict who will be the winner of the war. Use economic theory and concepts to justify your prediction. Obviously, there’s no right or wrong answer to your prediction, so this final project will be evaluated on the basis of how well you:
research and explain the products being developed
research the players and their stake in these products
analyze the alliances and their strategies
base your conclusion on your analysis and evidence
tie your analysis and conclusions to the readings
Please do not chose the iPad as the one you think will win. Chose any other one. Some terms to think about while writing the paper are: lock-in, migration costs, evolution/revolution strategies, bundling, open source/proprietary, versioning, interoperability, APIs, brand loyalty/ recognition, openness/open source, brand-specific training, network externalities, positive/negative feedback,personalization/customizaiton, performance/backwards compatibility, standards, mergers and joint ventures, switching costs, consumer inertia, entrenchment, loyalty programs, the gutenberg project, eink, supply, demand, equilibrium, price determination, ceilings, floors, sustitutes, expectations in the market, price sensitivity, complements, differential pricing, value-added information services, consumer expectations, etc. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. Please use at least 10 of the 15 citations from the book (ISBN listed above) Thanks!
